PHAETHON CoE to Coordinate Three Horizon Europe Twinning Projects

Securing more than €2 million in Horizon Europe funding, PHAETHON CoE will coordinate three international research projects, further strengthening its role as a European hub for sustainable energy research and innovation.

PHAETHON CoE has secured funding to coordinate three new Horizon Europe Twinning projects under the WIDERA programme, attracting more than €2 million for the Centre and reinforcing its position as a leading European research hub for sustainable energy.

The achievement is particularly significant given the highly competitive nature of the call, with the three projects selected from more than 1,900 proposals submitted from across Europe. Together, the projects will bring €2,043,250 in Horizon Europe funding to PHAETHON CoE, while the total budget of the three international consortia exceeds €4.4 million.

As coordinator of all three projects, PHAETHON CoE will lead international research collaborations spanning some of Europe’s leading universities and research organisations, further strengthening its research capacity, expanding its international partnerships and advancing scientific excellence in key areas of the energy transition.

The Projects

TWIN-CYGRID

Twinning for Excellence in Smart Grid Cyber Security

Principal Investigator: Dr Charalambos Anastassiou

The project will strengthen research excellence in the cybersecurity of smart electricity grids through collaboration with the University of Warwick, RWTH Aachen University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

TRUST-H2

Towards Reliable Underground Hydrogen Storage: Twinning for Excellence in Geomechanics, Reservoir Modelling and Energy-System Integration

Principal Investigator: Dr Charalampos Konstantinou

TRUST-H2 focuses on advancing research excellence in underground hydrogen storage, bringing together expertise in geomechanics, reservoir modelling and integrated energy systems in collaboration with Utrecht University and EPFL.

En-ACT

Enabling Active Citizen Engagement in a Just Green Energy Transition

Principal Investigators: Professor Georgia Panayiotou and Professor Constantinos Christofides

En-ACT aims to strengthen research on citizen participation and social engagement in the energy transition through collaboration with the University of Konstanz, CIEMAT, Kaunas University of Technology and the University of Groningen.

Strengthening European Research Excellence

The three projects address complementary dimensions of the energy transition, spanning smart grid cybersecurity, hydrogen technologies and citizen engagement. Together, they will enhance PHAETHON CoE’s research capabilities, deepen international scientific collaboration and contribute to the development of innovative, sustainable energy solutions for Europe.

The projects also represent another important milestone in the Centre’s strategic development under the Horizon Europe Teaming programme. Through sustained investment in research excellence, world-class partnerships and research infrastructure, PHAETHON CoE continues to expand its role within the European research landscape.

This achievement reflects the Centre’s steady evolution as a European hub for research and innovation in sustainable energy, with an increasingly prominent leadership role in competitive European research initiatives.
