The PHAETHON Centre of Excellence (CoE) at the University of Cyprus is a Research and Innovation Centre specialising in intelligent, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions. Established through the PHAETHON Teaming for Excellence Horizon Europe project, the Centre is rapidly evolving into a world-class research hub, building on the successful 10-year track record of its predecessor, the FOSS Research Centre.
PHAETHON aims to advance research and innovation excellence in the energy field by developing solutions that address contemporary global energy challenges and support a sustainable and secure energy future.
The Centre maintains strong links with industry, policymakers, and innovation ecosystems, while collaborating strategically with leading European institutions, including the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the University of Groningen (UG). Through these partnerships, selected PhD researchers have the opportunity to undertake joint or co-supervised doctoral training, benefiting from access to world-class academic expertise, research infrastructure, and international collaboration networks.
PHAETHON conducts research in key and timely fields, including renewable energy systems, smart grids, energy storage, artificial intelligence for energy applications, and the social and human dimensions of the energy transition. The Centre provides an inspiring and international environment for conducting high-quality research that contributes to Europe’s transition towards a cleaner, more efficient, and resilient energy future.
